Six on Saturday

1.  I thought it would be really funny to just post a picture of 6 inches of snow in our front yard, but we didn't quite make the 6 inch mark. ;)  We're probably closer to 3-4 inches.  But the AWESOMER than awesome part is that a plow had already come through our neighborhood before 10 AM this morning!  And then we got another pass through by a plow before noon. Our roads are fully plowed and just wet, so not really even any concern about the roads icing back over tonight.  YEA for Ohio taking care of business in a snow storm. :)  I am one happy, not confined to my house, former-Floridian mama. :)

2.  Anna Reaghan tried sweet potatoes this week and she is a fan. :)  She is so much more eager to eat solids than Asa was, it just tickles me. :)  I'll try to get some video up soon of her chowing down.

3.  Asa has reignited his passion for playing with the rice table in the basement.  He asks every day to go down and play with it.  He loves to drives trains and cars all around it and then bury things in the rice. I love to hear his chatter and the conversations and stories he makes up as he plays.  It's PRECIOUS.

4.  Asa seems to react very strongly (and negatively) to artificial dyes.  I've heard it's really not an uncommon thing, but red dye in particular really throws him for a loop.  He loses pretty much all semblance of self-control and obedience, becomes crazy bonkers, and it's just not any fun for him or us when he is so wild and has so much trouble choosing what's right... and it's so easily preventable by not eating things with red dye.  Unfortunately, our church nursery includes a lollipop in the kids' Sunday school bags (ugh).  Asa KNOWS it's in there, so we can't pretend he didn't get one.  But neither can we make sure he doesn't get orange, red, or purple lollipops.  After he FELL APART during lunch last week thanks to a purple lolli, I broke down and ordered some organic, natural dye lollipops online.  They are actually REALLY tasty, and we will keep a stash in the car and his diaper bag so can just pull a little switcheroo each Sunday and give him a "safe" lollipop instead of one that will make us all sorry later on. :)  He is THRILLED that there is a "'tainer" of lollis in the house now.  I had to put them WAY up high because he was trying to drag his stool to every medium-high place I set them. :)  And when Matt's friends came over for Bible study on Thursday, Asa ran up to one of them and said, "I have lollipops.  I lick them [slurping sound] and then crunch them ["crunch, crunch, crunch"]!!!"  He cracks me up! :)

5.  Anna Reaghan has a new happy face but it doesn't look particularly happy.  She scrunches her nose in a way that almost makes her look angry and you're not sure how she's really feeling until she starts laughing.  We'll have to get that on video, too. :)

6.  Asa likes to read books to US lately.  He climbs in the comfy chair in his room, places a book in his lap (usually one we recently read), and then turns page by page telling us the story.  Sometimes he just references the illustrations, but sometimes for a book he's heard many times he uses particular phrases he knows go with different pages.  I.LOVE.IT.  He has also figured out that we are reading words on the pages of books and often requests for you to run your fingers under the words as you read the story. He makes my teacher-fascinated-by-early-literacy heart so happy. :)

I was trying to be nice ;), but yes they ARE scary! We try to avoid dyes in general, even before we noticed a reaction in Asa. I'm sure some could say Asa should just obey and not fuss if we told him he could not have the/a lollipop, but a tantrum-ing toddler is not really how we'd like to leave church every week. ;) All natural lollis it is! We pulled the switcheroo yesterday and EVERYONE was happy. :)
