10 on Tuesday

I missed posting 5 on Friday last week when we were out of town, so I thought I'd make up for it today!

1.  We spent last week traveling to visit our families.  We usually try to make a summer road trip earlier in the year, but Matt hadn't been at his new job long enough to take time off when our normal vacation week rolled around.  We decided to take advantage of Labor Day week instead and visit both our families in TN and SC.

2.  The timing was GREAT because we got to see both our  moms ON their birthdays!!  HOORAY!!

3.  Asa had LOTS of great cousin time.  I LOVE that he can truly interact with them now.  It was his first time seeing his cousin Izzy in SC and really interacting with her (he last saw her at Christmas when he was 6 months old).  Fun, fun, fun time with cuzzies! :)

4.  Sammy endured a week at the "spa."  She definitely lost weight and they told us she refused dinner (at least for the day we picked her up... by the looks of her I'd say she refused it more nights than that), but that's her usual response when we're gone for a longer trip.  She is verrrrry glad to be home and enjoying some extra attention. :)

5.  It is FALL here now.  We're told the temps changed the weekend we left.  Highs are now in the low 70s or high 60s and evenings are getting into the 40s!  The highs were still low 90s/high 80s when we left!  This is CRAZY (but wonderful!  I need to enjoy every minute though, because I have NO idea when winter will hit instead!).

6.  I switched out Asa's clothes to prep for this cooler weather.  It made me sad to pack up some favorite outfits, but judging by the new clothes hanging in his closet, there are plenty of new favorites to be found!

7.  We bought a new bed frame.  When we were first married, we got a particle board/put together bookshelf headboard.  I loved the bookshelf feature even though that's not particularly grown up or romantic, I guess.  Anyway, it kind of just barely made the move from the townhouse in FL to the house in FL.  It was jerry-rigged (particle board holds up so well ;) ) and definitely not going to survive a move across the country to OH!  We've had our mattress on plain rails since our belongings arrived which is fine, but didn't feel very homey or inviting to me.  I scoped out a furniture store that runs sales on bed frames each week.  We ended up with a sleigh bed!  It's a cherry finish and we really like it.  It really helps finish off our room--I'll try to post pictures soon!

8.  Asa tried some new foods this week and liked one of them!  He decided sloppy joe sauce is DELICIOUS. :)  HE couldn't get enough!  He also liked baked beans for a short amount of time (4 bites' worth) and then changed his mind. :)

9.  Asa is growing!  Today he is wearing a pair of jeans that are size 12-18 months!  I think this is the first (or mayyyybe 2nd) time he's worn something that was the same size as his age!  Wow!  To be fair, they are a small 12-18 months, but they fit in the waist and the length!  Asa has a check up tomorrow with a new ped (please pray it's a good fit!), so we'll know his official stats soon!

10.  We (Asa and I) begin Bible study tomorrow!  He's stayed in the nursery during church up to an hour, and Bible study is 2 hours, so that will be new and different for him.  But the same ladies work on Wednesday mornings and said they missed him last week. :)  I am so thankful for our smooth transition to using church nursery.  God has really covered that big change for both Asa and me!

And speaking of our sweet boy, I hear him talking to himself upstairs. :)  He's up from his nap and ready to roll again!

Five on Friday

1.  Asa is adding more words every week!  This week he walked up to me and said, "Hi, Mama!"  He also said, "bib" for the first time.  And he's added "bye-bye" to his waves. :)

2.  He's walking more, too!  Now he'll let go of whatever he's cruising on of his own volition and walk to something else!

3.  New foods, too!  Rice, spaghetti noodles, and tomato sauce!  Gooooo, Asa! :)

4.  Asa is having his first hair cut this weekend.  It's time to snip those little ear wings, trim those bangs that are forming, and stop the hair from crawling over his collar. :)  Stay tuned for pics!

5.  We are trying some new recipes for dinner this week.  I'll let you know how they turn out. :)

Another Big Wait

Today instead of waiting to move or for our furniture to arrive, we are waiting for G-Ma to come!  Woo hoo!  G-Ma is coming to explore Ohio with us and help me unpack!  It's a little bit of a slow process with Ba-Basa underfoot.  His room and the kitchen are really coming along, but the rest of the house leaves much to be desired!

We received our closing documents by FedEx this morning.  Tomorrow we will sign them and get them notarized and mail them back--with our keys!  This is unreal but such an answer to prayer!

Asa seems to have had another little mini growth spurt the last few days.  He seems to have one every few weeks--it's like his body really IS trying to catch up.  Amazing!  After several days of eating tons, he had a much lower volume day today (so far).  He did this right after the Hilton Head growth spurt, but that was also followed by a fever.  I'm hoping this is just a tapering of the growth spurt and not the onset of a bug!

Asa slept GREAT last night!  His room has shades but his window faces the sun in the morning, so he was waking with sunrise.  Matt installed a curtain rod last night and I put his curtains up.  It's great because the room feels more like "his" and because he did NOT wake with the sun!  He slept until just before 8 (8 was his normal waking time in FL) ANNNNND his first stretch last night was 6 hours!  He had a great morning nap earlier as well.  Praise the Lord for some rest for all!  Those teeth are still swollen along his top gums, so I am enjoy every good stretch of sleep while it lasts!

Last night we tried a local drive in restaurant called Swenson's.  We were actually looking for Sonic but switched gears.  It was good (but I like Sonic better--eek!), and we had fun watching the car hops RACE from the cars to the building (you can park anywhere in the parking lot, not just in stalls like at Sonic, and the carhops literally run FULL OUT... it's one of their "things").  Matt had a butterscotch milkshake and I had a hot fudge one.  They were yummy!

That about covers things for now.  Still unpacking and learning my way around.  Still can't believe Asa's birthday is this month!  And that reminds me you should STAY TUNED because I have an adorable video of Asa I will be posting momentarily!!

Pediatric Specialties Clinic

On Friday Asa had an appointment with a metabolic genetics specialist at a hospital in town. Just knowing he was seeing a metabolic geneticist made me nervous. Then I received their form letter instructing me we would see a genetics counselor, med students, the specialist himself, and that bringing family pictures along would be helpful in looking for traits that might make any number of disorders more easily identifiable. Thankfully, we had our little weight check with Dr. K before the specialist appointment and she reaffirmed that our visit was NOT a big deal. That is the form letter they send to everyone. Our appointment was for the specialist who has been consulting on Asa's failure to thrive lab work ups to see our little patient for himself before declaring he is fine. Whew.

It was obvious the staff are well trained in working with children; it WAS the pediatric specialties clinic at the hospital, after all. During his blood pressure check, the nurse blew bubbles to distract him and everyone had a sweet and engaging demeanor with him. A highlight was that the scale in the clinic said Asa was 17 lbs. 11.9 oz! I know scales can vary by even up to a pound, but that weight suggests Asa is maintaining his rate of gaining 5-6 oz. per week. WOO HOO!

We visited with the genetics counselor first. She drew a little family tree in Asa's file as we talked and went through our family history. The good news is that our families are blessed with great health and there was no information there that needed to be pursued as a possible cause of Asa's funky lab work. As we talked, just as has suspected for quite some time now, the consensus kept coming back to Asa's body just taking its time getting levels back to normal. And to be fair, the last labs (urine organic acids... although the serum amino acids came back NORMAL so that's a GREAT sign) that came back were conducted about a month after Asa's tongue tie was fixed, and it took 3 more weeks to get results back. That info was outdated before we even got the results! Now it's been over 6 MORE weeks.

Next the actual metabolic geneticist came in with a med student from Italy. We talked a little more about Asa's history and the events that precipitated the lab work being completed in the first place. He played with Asa while he evaluated him and again said Asa seems healthy now and is obviously eating and gaining much more appropriately. :) He ordered a repeat of the lab work (oh, joy!), but we anticipated that and EVERYONE anticipates the lab work ALL returning normal this time. Please pray with us that it does!

The clinic is aware we are moving, and it takes several weeks to receive some of the test results anyway. They suggested I call them when we are settled in Ohio. We're hoping for an "everything's great!" report. But if there IS more information to pursue as a result of these tests, they'll refer us to someone in Ohio to pick up Asa's case and get to the bottom of anything that is still abnormal.

I am very thankful for the doctors' kindness to Asa and me and to hear from such a learned person what we have been seeing all spring--Asa is doing GREAT! The lab work was not so fun to collect, as Asa is old enough now to remember the last rounds (in Feb. and March) and anticipate what was going to happen (i.e. lots of crying and trying to fight off the lab techs). But it is DONE. An added bonus was the specialist inquiring about Asa's name and getting to share about King Asa in the OT! I am amazed and humbled how something as "simple" as Asa's name has provided us countless opportunities to tell people about God!

Drinking from a Cup

When Asa wasn't gaining weight well and it seemed all we did was nurse, nurse, nurse all day long to get him caught up, we somehow fell off the "give a bottle once/week to make sure he'll still take one" bandwagon. Oh yeah, and the "he HAS to be hydrated; give him water," demands at the not-our-favorite lab didn't help any. You see, we tried water from a cup, but you should have heard him gag and spit and act like we were giving him poison. Then, knowing I might be ruining my son for bottles but desperate to the answers only a blood test could provide, I gave him water in a bottle. He eagerly took the bottle only to act disgusted and horribly betrayed when he realized it did not have mommy's milk in it but that awful water stuff again. He has not taken a bottle. Ever since. I knew that was a possibility, but I thought surely he'd come around eventually.

We tried, not as consistently as we could have, to offer a bottle before/after every feeding a couple days. IF I could get it anywhere near Asa's mouth, all he did was chew on it. I tried other nipple sizes to no avail. I even tried a sippy topper on his bottles. He was not having it, so I gave up.

We tried sippy cups--spouted sippy cups, straw sippy cups. More chewing ensued, but no drinking. I filled them with my milk, diluted and undiluted apple juice, peach juice (since loves his peachies), but still no success.

Then a funny thing happened. During our Day at Disney, Asa drank water from my Camelbak water bottle. Aha! So now we knew he COULD and sometimes WOULD not only drink from a type of "cup" but even drink water!

Someone told me he probably just did not normally have thirst that needed to be quenched as he nurses pretty frequently still. That made a lot of sense to me and I backed off worrying that my son would only drink from me. It's not like it would stay that way the rest of his life (can you imagine?!). He was hot and had a long day at Disney. It was reasonable that Asa was thirstier than usual that day and willing to quench it with a non-preferred liquid.

I have offered him my Camelbak off and on since then and recently he's been more regularly taking a sip here and there (the timing coincides with our highs hitting the 90s... welcome to "spring" in Florida). I had the idea to see if there are any "baby" Camelbaks. I knew there wree baby Nalgenes (grip n gulp), and I was willing to try that but hoped to stick with the method Asa knows and accepts.

I was thrilled to find out that Camelbak DOES make a little kiddie version of their great water bottle. Guess who now has his very own, matching Mommy's Camelbak water bottle?! (don't make fun of the matching Mommy part... if you are looking for a feminine kiddie Camelbak, you have several cute options. None of the masculine designs "fit" Asa, so blue was the only default left).

OH MY, it is adorable to see him slurping from his little bottle. Best of All was the look on his face when I first showed him his. I offered it to him and he took a sip or two. Then I held mine and his up next to each other. I don't even know how to put his reaction into words, but it was obvious he "got" that they were the same and he now had one of his very own. He flapped his arms, squealed, bounced in his high chair, and grinned from ear to ear while laughing. I WISH I had managed to capture it on video. It was pure Delight. It even fits perfectly in the little cup holder on his tray.

There you have it. We are a Camelbak family through and through... even Daddy has one! :) Can't you just see us at our next picnic? :)

For the Record Books

I just had to record for posterity :) that Asa seems to be making some peace with night time sleep. It's been awhile since he actually *fought* sleep at night--he goes down reasonably well most of the time and almost *always* goes right back to sleep after he eats during the night. The thing is, he's over 10 months old and was still often waking 3 times/night to eat. Until very recently, I didn't really get more than 3 hours of consecutive sleep.... ever. I can recall 2 times I've been sleeping deeply enough to dream.

The first night Asa and I were in TN, he had a longer than usual first stretch of sleep (4-5 hours... he had cut down to about 3 prior to that), then the rest of the night was normal--2.5-3 hour stretches. The second night he barely made it to 3 hours each stretch, it was more like 2.5 hour stretches. Then the boy started eating like a HORSE. I had never seen him pack away so much food at lunch and dinner. And slowly, his sleep started shifting as well.

It's almost 2 weeks later, and the past 2 nights, Asa's first 2 stretches of sleep have been 5-5.5 hours EACH (the 2nd stretch is of utmost importance because I am actually in bed during it, and he has traditionally resisted stretching it even when he stretched out the first sleep)! I am sleeping more than 3 consecutive hours! In fact, last night I slept **5** consecutive hours!!! I am THRILLED! I even had to WAKE Asa up the past two mornings (I would let him sleep, but it totally messes up his naps if he sleeps in late)! Praise the LORD!

At our 9 month check up Asa's doctor asked how he's sleeping. She said normally she would encourage us to help him sleep longer, but that if I was willing to feed him whenever he woke she would encourage us to do that instead--it's an easy way to get extra calories into him. I think he has come a LONG way in catching up in his weight, and now he finally weighs enough and his stomach is big enough to hold enough food (that's a lot of enoughs) that he is sleeping longer. How like our God to give this gift right before I go back to pack up our entire house?

I know he could fall off the bandwagon again at anytime, especially when the next round of teething starts. But it is BEYOND encouraging to know we are getting there. We can get back here again after the next round of teething. I WILL sleep again (there's always that little voice that wonders if you really will. I admit I had wondered to myself if he would still be waking so much by the time we, Lord willing, have another baby and if I truly would ever sleep again!)!

This is such a huge breakthrough for Asa I had to record it here--and in his baby book! Yea, Asa! Yea, sleep! Yea, God!

10 on Tuesday (a day late)

I have not been very good about updating our blog. I think my days are just so filled with Asa, and in general I talk to my family a lot, so they are up to date on our happenings. But I would love for this to be a fun record of Asa's growth and our family's events, so I want to update more frequently (I love the blog --> book companies like blurb and would love to have this turned into a book one day). So, I'm going to try posting 10 tidbits on Tuesdays, even if I don't post anything else that week. I'm a day late this week, but hopefully not a dollar short. ;)

1. Love at first bite
Asa LOVES peaches! We finally found a food our boy loves and will hold his mouth open for. He even makes little sounds sometimes if you don't have the next bite ready and waiting for him when he finishes the previous bite. :) We are SOO very thankful to have found a food Asa likes. It led us to try pears as well, and he's a big fan of pears too! As an added bonus, he is now eating baby oatmeal again--when I make it with peach and/or pear juice. Our ped is a big fan of that "mommy creativity." On one hand, I know that juice is packed with sugars and it gave me pause initially. But this is Asa we're talking about! He can use a little extra. ;)

2. On the move
Asa is starting to "up" crawl. He's been doing all sorts of crawling maneuvers since the end of November. But now he's starting to throw a few real crawling "steps" in as he motors about the house. When he wants to go fast, he drops down to his tummy and army crawls. But he's really starting to coordinate the up crawl. And he is SO proud of himself when he gets to what he wants.

3. Praise upon praise
We think we have figured out the source of Asa's funky blood work! We met with a lactation consultant who checked his mouth before she did anything else... and she discovered he was "tongue tied." The frenulum ( tissue below your tongue) extended too far forward underneath his tongue, preventing him from nursing very efficiently. They were able to correct the tissue length right in the office during our appointment, and the following week Asa's weight gain was NORMAL for a baby his age! PRAISE THE LORD! I am doing a lot of pumping and taking some herbs to get my supply up to what Asa will be able to take in now (apparently he got worn out and would stop too soon before the tongue issue was corrected). He is doing so well! The LC also said that from the outside, he looked like he was nursing perfectly so there was no way I could have known anything was wrong since I didn't have any pain (I guess nursing pain is common when there are tongue issues). We are hopeful everything is back on track and will repeat Asa's blood work a month after it was first done, which is in two weeks.

4. Handyman
Asa's hand control is amazing. Seriously. He is already working very hard on developing the pincer (thumb and forefinger) grasp. He can pick up tiny pieces of "scrot" (dirt, etc.) from the floor--Mommy has to vacuum a LOT these days! He picks up small pieces of food. He grabs and moves his toys with SUCH intention. We often play a game of putting his little people on TOP of their school bus. He carefully brings his hand near and plucks them right off the top. It took about 3 days for him to refine his approach and do it successfully. He is definitely on the verge of getting into EVERYTHING.

5. Brrrrrr
It is cold in Florida. The weather reports said it was on its way out, and then they said it's here to stay for awhile. Brrrrrr. But at least we're all getting to enjoy our wintery clothes more than usual this year. :) Normally they are out for all of 2 weeks! Ha!

6. Will you be my Valentine?
Matt and I had fun doing little things to celebrate Valentine's Day (and going out to dinner the week before when G-Ma was in town). I got him 2 necessities: a new pair of jeans and a new dress shirt; and a silly something: this crazy stuffed figure he always picks up and laughs at when he sees it at Target. He got me some really cute Hoops & Yoyo notepads and a notepad holder, some dairy free candy :), and a card entitling me to a head massage, foot rub, dinner cooked by Matt, diaper changed by Matt, etc. whenever I want. :) It was really sweet. He also gave me a card from Asa. Inside he had printed of several funny pictures of Asa and made "thank you" cards from each of them. For instance, one said, "Thank you for changing my diaper" and inside was a picture of Asa pouting on the changing table. Then the next one said, "Even when they are bad ones," and the picture inside was Asa crying on the changing table. It was very sweet and we both cracked up. :) I made Asa a special Valentine's shirt for the weekend, and he had a "My First Valentine's" outfit G-Pa and G-Ma sent him to wear on Sunday.

7. Sleep
Starting solids has not affected Asa's sleep, at least not in a positive way! Before solids, he consistently slept a 4 hour stretch the first part of the evening. Now it's a 3-3.5 hour stretch. He is NOT sleeping any longer than he was before he started "real" food. It's mostly every 3 hours all night long. So, throw that "conventional wisdom" out the window, at least for my baby! He is also in the process of dropping his 3rd nap. That is hard when he's super clingy (we're in the midst of separation anxiety right now), but it's fun when he's feeling playful. :) It also resulted in a TWO hour long 2nd nap yesterday, and it would be AMAZING if that became the new norm!

8. Babies
I am hosting, along with some friends, a baby shower on Sunday for another friend, L. I am so excited! The only snag is that Asa is currently refusing a bottle. If we can't get him to take one before Sunday, Matt will have to swing by with Asa when it's time for him to eat and I'll have to sneak away for a few moments to feed him and then send the men back out on their merry way. :) Thankfully there are a few of us sharing hostess duties (but it's at our house), so they can keep things running if indeed Asa keeps refusing to take a bottle. The refusal is also crazy right now because I'm pumping a ton, but I have no way to get the pumped milk into him (he doesn't like baby oatmeal made with milk). We're not giving up though! :)

9. Feeling crafty
I made Asa a new floor blanket yesterday. I still need to hand tie it, but then I will post a picture. It's super cute. Matt thought I had bought it when he saw it. :) I'm also ALMOST ready to make my "quilt sandwich" for my first quilt! I just need to piece a strip into the backing and I'll be ready to get started. I am so excited to see how it turns out!

10. A place for everything....
...and everything in its place. We bought a great storage unit for the living room (behind the couch) for my sewing things. I LOVE it! It's one of those cubby shelves you can put canvas drawers in. I have a drawer for patterns, one for notions, two for scraps, one for embroidery items, one for trims, etc. And my sewing machine sits so nicely on top. It's GREAT and everything stays neatly out of sight when I'm not using it. Thank you, Matt, for approving it!! :)

That about covers it. I am hoping to upload some video of Asa soon. But if time gets away from me, you can expect 10 more tidbits next Tuesday. :)

Worth the Wait

G-Ma came to visit this weekend. She was planning to come last weekend, but snow predictions in TN kept her wheels spinning, so to speak, for an extra week. Asa has changed and learned so many new things since we were in TN for Christmas. He didn't have any teeth then, and now he has TWO! It was fun to show her all of his latest and newest tricks. :) And even though waiting an extra week to see her was a bummer up front (though keeping her safe was #1), now we have one LESS week between this visit and her next one. :)

Asa showed G-Ma all sorts of fun things, like his new Christmas toys, pulling/pushing up to his knees, getting closer and closer to a real crawl, his new favorite scrunchy nose face and sniff, both of his teeth, and how to eat like a big boy (oh my!). Our doctor asked us to increase his solid foods while we figure out some things that are a little off with his metabolism, so G-Ma arrived just in time to see us increase to offering solids twice a day. It took about a week of coaxing before Asa became willing to eat from a spoon (and eat anything but milk). He didn't like cereal + pumped milk, but bananas were pretty convincing. :) In order to get some cereal in him as well, our pediatrician said we could add apple juice. So he has been having apple juice mixed with rice cereal + banana twice a day since Saturday. The rice cereal and bananas had him stopped up pretty well, so we switched to oatmeal cereal instead. It's less binding, has good fiber for keeping things going, and he can totally handle the less runny consistency now. He has no problems swallowing the solid foods... you just have to convince him to take them!

G-Ma arrived at the end of a week with lots of running around for Asa. To sort out the metabolism issues, we've been trying to have blood drawn for a couple tests. Trying being the operative word. One day, we got to go to the lab three times! We ended up going to a different lab where they were able to get a line their very first try (praise the Lord!). Now we are waiting on a few more results and a couple follow-up tests to narrow down exactly where things are going. We praise God our doctor said Asa's development is perfect and that he's even reaching milestones early. We just need to figure out why all the milk Asa's been eating hasn't been helping him increase his weight a bit more typically. We love our pediatrician, and she has been wonderful. The two weeks of working to sort this out since our last well visit make me so very thankful (all over again) that we switched pediatricians. She has been incredibly available to us with answers to questions, results of tests as they come back, etc. She's even called us back after hours twice when she couldn't call during normal hours on busy Fridays. We will actually be seeing her tomorrow for a follow up as we continue to dig into smoothing out Asa's growth.

Stay tuned for videos and pictures of Asa eating his big boy food and some changes around the house.

And what's a post without a cute picture of Asa?

Here a Moo, there a moo...

...everywhere a moo, moo.... except at our house!

I think I've mentioned, but maybe I haven't, that we figured out Asa and dairy foods do not agree! So, I've been on a quest to figure out what I can eat that doesn't have dairy or what non-dairy alternatives I have access to.

Enter: Mother Earth Market. We have a local health foods market that I found out carries several vegan brands. Yesterday I went to check it out. We already bought some rice milk from Publix so I can cook meals that call for milk. And we got dairy free "butter" (the cholesterol lowering kinds do not have dairy protein! We got benecol) from Publix too. Hooray for bread and butter and butter on a baked potato. :) At Mother Earth I found vegan cheese slices. I put some on my baked potato (I tore it into pieces so it would be like shredded cheese) last night. I can't say they have a TON of flavor, and the texture is much stiffer than a slice of real cheese, but they did a little something and it didn't taste bad.

I also got some rice milk based "ice cream." It has strawberries mixed in with it. I have to admit, it does not taste creamy like ice cream, but it is cold and refreshing. :) For dessert last night, I scooped myself some of the "ice cream," added slices from half a banana, and crumbled some nilla wafer cookies on top. It was quite tasty!

Someone from church recommended Tofutti Cuties ice cream sandwiches to me, so I picked up a box of those. They are soy milk based. I found a variety that has vanilla cookies for the sandwich part (still avoiding chocolate, i.e. caffeine) and key lime pie flavored soy milk ice cream. YUM!

Lastly, I got some frozen pizzas that are completely vegan and a Luna bar--hopefully a lunch option and snack option when I'm short on time due to errands, appointments, or just an off day for our little guy.

The funniest part of my trip to the store was when I was checking out. I had to laugh that I was in a health food store and basically had all this junk/snack food. The cashier commented on the ice cream bars, and I told her I have a newborn who does not get along with cow's milk. She said she'd never heard of that, but that if he doesn't drink cow's milk he'll grow up to be a really healthy baby. hehe So there I am, the horrible meat eater buying vegan food just because my son has driven me to desperation. :) Maybe you had to be there, but it made me laugh in the car on my way home. :)

In other news, Asa has almost worked himself into a pretty regular routine. The only bad part of that is when something changes it throws him for a loop even more than before! For example, the past several days he's eaten at 2:30 AM, 5:30 AM, 8:30 AM, 10:30 AM, 1:00 PM, 3:30 or 4:00 PM, 6:00 PM, 8:30 PM, and 10:30 PM.... so some 2 hour spacings upon real wake up and right before bed time, 3-4 hours at night, and about 2.5 hour splits most of the day time feedings. Anyway, last night he got off. He at at 2:30, I finally got him settled in at 3:30 (he had gas that kept startling him, but at least he was not in pain from it), he woke up at 4:30 and I was with him until 5:30. He often eats then, but he was so tired from not sleeping he was definitely not hungry at 5:30. Then he woke again and Matt took him at 5:45. He got him to sleep at 6:00 and they slept on the couch until 7:15, when he woke up and I fed him again. Then he went back to sleep with me until 10. But that means he essentially skipped the 5:30 feeding, which also means he missed a chance to have some milk help relax him and push some gas out. Anyway, he's off today. Tired but hungry but gassy and not relaxed enough to push it out. I fed him again at 10, tried at 12 to make up for the missed feeding, but he was distracted by his tummy. Not interested at 12:30, and finally ate okay at 1:00. So at least we are back on his usual (for lately) feeding times now that I fed him at 1:00. He is currently asleep in the swing because he wanted to be cradled instead of laying flat in his crib. I think it will be much better when he finally empties his stomach, but who knows how many more feedings that will take! Poor little guy!

So anyway, when he is in his routine, he has been doing really well. And it's really nice to have some predictability to the day. He's also interacting more during play times which is sweet. He's noticing his feet more and more and even grabbed one today! He is also starting to flail his arms at things that hang above him, hitting them. He's not doing it totally intentionally, but he does notice that he's doing it and seems to like when he manages to hit a toy. We'll try to get some video of it soon. :)

There you have an update from us. :) My mom arrives on Wednesday to spend a long weekend with us, and I can't wait to hear how she thinks Asa has changed! We hope you've had a good weekend and have a great week ahead. :)

Hindsight

I have decided hindsight is going to be a very big part of parenting. I think we'll realize so much looking back that we question in the moment.

How many more pushes til this baby is born? You only know looking back.
How many hours of labor will it take? You only know once it's done.
Why is my baby doing ______? Is it ______? We'll only know on the other side.

What brings this topic to mind? Asa has been topsy turvy today! I guess it really started some yesterday, but today he's woken up from every nap 10-15 minutes early. He's gone from 9 feedings (on average) during the day to 11. He is impatient nursing, gulping for milk and pulling off once he gulps all the initial let down. If I offer the other side then, he gulps that down and then pulls off/nurses (back and forth). So we switch back and forth a few times. All this when he HAD settled into a little routine of eating every 2-2.5 hours during the day and being woken to eat every 3-3.5 hours at night. We were so looking forward to him achieving birth weight so we could let him sleep longer at night and all get some rest. Ha. Rest? Not looking likely right now, Mr. I-want- to-eat-every-2-hours-or-less-no matter-what-time-it-is. He's just fussy and not himself! I know babies change all the time, especially just when you think you have them figured out. But it's so hard not to know for sure what's going on with the little guy! I'm so thankful Mom is here to reassure me. :)

We have no reason to think it's a supply issue. On top of Asa's symptoms, I drank 2 liters of water in less than an hour and was still thirsty and I've been hungry all the time the last two days. Lastly, Asa is 3 weeks old. The lactation consultant said to be on the lookout for a growth spurt around 3 weeks.

So, nursing mamas, does this sound like a growth spurt to you?? I have to add one last thing. At the doctor last week for his 2 week check-up, the nurse said he was 21.5" long and that his head shape probably rounded out more causing the discrepancy in length from his birth measurements (22"). I measured him today, and he is definitely 22.5" at least (he was a bit squirmy).

Alright, so if you have any input, that would be great. I think this is one of those things we won't know for sure about until after it's over. If he settles back down in a day or two and his voracious appetite slows, we can most likely check off growth spurt. Please pray for our stamina in the mean time! Also, according to our scale, he is 8 lbs. 3.5 oz. We are hoping to take him Thurs. to be weighed for the official okay from the doctor (have to go this week). Please pray that the scale we have is accurate and that theirs is too, so we can stop being pestered about his weight! :)

Thank you!
