Five on Friday

1.  We are celebrating our family's little Christmas this weekend.  I am so excited!  I am really anticipating Asa's reactions, and I have a few surprises in store for Matt.  One in particular I think will REALLY excite him (I hope so!). :)  We'll also have our traditional gourmet breakfast dinner on our china and with our crystal.  I'll have to modify a few things to make them dairy free, but it should still be quite delicious. :)

2.  Today we saw our pediatrician to ask her to help us find someone to clip Anna Reaghan's tongue tie.  She is being very supportive and directed us to a specialist she thinks will do it but said we have other options if they won't.  I've suspected she had tongue tie all along, but we hoped it wouldn't affect her feeding since she gained so well at first and the ENT we saw as a newborn thought she was fine.  At 4 months, she had a little adjustment to her growth curve, but that could have been attributed to the reflux issues she developed.  A month later, she has not improved and our lactation consultant confirmed AR has a posterior tongue tie (just like Asa).  It's felt like a nightmare at times to be going through this again.  But Matt and my mom keep reminding me we know what to look for this time and are being proactive about it as a result.  No "wait and see" for this baby.  We want that tie clipped NOW she can start gaining well again.  We really appreciate prayers we can get in with someone next week to have it clipped and that she starts gaining normally after that like Asa did!  I'm already taking herbs and pumping to get my supply up for when she can eat more efficiently after the tongue tie is clipped.  I'm ready when she is! :)

3.  This week I helped Anna Reaghan make a hand- and footprint reindeer just like Asa did his first Christmas.  I also helped Asa make footprint snowmen--we're actually hoping to finish them today (he's very excited about painting on their buttons and carrot noses).  He LOOOVES snowmen this winter!  It's so cute! :)

sample reindeer (I'll post pics of AR's actual creation soon)

sample snowman (I'll post Asa's actual canvas soon)

4.  Asa saw me slipping a few things (candy mostly) into Matt's stocking in preparation for this weekend and was very intrigued by that.  When Matt got home from work, Asa ran straight for the stockings calling out, "Daddy, you have foooooood!  You have fooooood!" andproceeded to pull the stocking down almost onto his head.  Once we calmed him down from being terribly frightened by his near miss, we chuckled over his enthusiasm. :)

5.  My Silhouette Cameo came!!  It's taken me a few days to try my first project with it (needy babies, pumping every night to keep my supply up as AR has struggled the past few weeks, being a little intimidated by the machine), but I did a test cut of the pieces I want out of cardstock, and next I can cut them from vinyl and get to work.  I'll reveal the finished project after Christmas.  I'm so excited to complete it and hope it turns out the way I have planned! :)

What herbs are you taking??? Just curious!

Hey Alissa,
I'm taking Fenugreek and Blessed Thistle. It's the same combo the lactation consultant who "fixed" Asa had me take to increase production once Asa's tongue was clipped and he could eat more. Part of the problem with this whole ordeal is when they're not nursing efficiently, they're not great at telling your body they need more milk (they don't stimulate well and they get tired and stop nursing too before they really get enough). So the herbs help send that message while we get ready for AR to eat more. I've also heard of moms taking them to boost supply for pumping/returning to work, or any other time you notice a dip. If you take them (the starting dose is 3 capsules each, 3x/day), just make sure you wean off of them very slowly. Going to fast can cause a HUGE dip in supply.
